Egypt Introduces Early Closure of Stores to Save Electricity

This measure is part of broader guidelines that include the early closure of cafes and commercial stores at 9 PM to achieve a 10% saving in electricity. In recent weeks, the Egyptian government has begun implementing a strict campaign to rationalize energy consumption due to the halt in oil and gas supplies. The campaign includes the closure of public shops, restaurants, and other activities at 9 PM, which has plunged the streets of the republic into darkness noticeably. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli called on citizens to participate in efforts to rationalize consumption, especially in the fields of fuel and electricity. Madbouli, during a press conference, considered the current crisis "one of the biggest crises the world is going through," stressing that the government is taking its austerity measures gradually so as not to directly affect citizens. He warned that the continuation of the crisis may impose the adoption of more difficult decisions, especially with estimates of rising oil prices globally, noting that the government decided to reduce street lighting to a third, while taking into account the security aspect. Within the framework of energy rationalization efforts, Egypt's most famous screen, known as the population counter screen, was turned off. The screen will be turned off during holidays and vacations, as a step to save electricity.
