UNESCO Adds Egyptian Koshari to Intangible Cultural Heritage List

UNESCO has announced the inclusion of 'Egyptian Koshari' in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for 2025. The Egyptian Ministry of Culture stated in a press release published today that this decision was made during the sessions of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee in the Indian capital, New Delhi. Dr. Ahmed Fouad Henou, Egypt's Minister of Culture, expressed his happiness with the registration of Koshari, making it the 11th element registered by Egypt on the lists of intangible cultural heritage. He noted that this is a new confirmation of the status of Egyptian heritage, its ability to inspire and renew, and the international community's appreciation for this heritage that Egyptians have preserved over the years. The minister confirmed that the inclusion of 'Egyptian Koshari' reflects the focus on the daily life culture of Egyptians, which is an authentic part of their identity. He stated that Koshari is the first Egyptian dish to be registered, and in the coming years, more elements related to social and cultural practices passed down through generations and expressing the spirit of participation and diversity within Egyptian society will be registered. He added that this registration reflects the success of Egypt's efforts in documenting and safeguarding its heritage, confirming the ministry's continued support for all heritage elements and enhancing cooperation with local communities, practitioners, and groups that preserve these living practices. Dr. Nehla Imam, Advisor to the Minister of Culture for Intangible Cultural Heritage and Egypt's representative to the Convention, addressed the committee on behalf of the Egyptian delegation, thanking and appreciating the committee for approving the inclusion of the element 'Koshari... a dish of daily life' in the Representative List of Human Heritage. She confirmed that this registration reflects Egypt's constant commitment to working with practitioners within local communities and for them, noting that the nomination file's preparation relied on close cooperation with the groups and individuals who practice this element daily, which allowed for highlighting its diversity and richness, and its role as a unifying social element reflecting continuous connection within natural and social environments. She stated that this achievement is the fruit of a long effort that began with the practitioners themselves who launched the nomination initiative, thanking Koshari restaurants and every Egyptian woman who preserves the way of preparing Koshari and passes it on to her children, considering everyone partners in this international recognition. She also expressed her sincere gratitude to the evaluation committee for its time and efforts in studying the file, and to the Convention's secretariat for its continuous support to States Parties, confirming that this support enhances Egypt's ability to continue its efforts in safeguarding and protecting its heritage.
