Egyptian Artist Munir Makram Sparks Controversy With Grave Ad

Egyptian artist Munir Makram sparked widespread debate on social media after appearing in an advertisement for selling graves. Makram appeared in a promotional video advertising graves at discounted prices, saying at the beginning of the clip: 'Give me a grave,' in reference to his famous show 'Give Me Your Mind,' which aired on Egyptian television during Ramadan for over 8 years. The video caused a huge controversy, with some considering it 'strange and unusual' advertising, describing it as a departure from the usual artistic context and a shockingly commercial approach to death. In response to this controversy, artist Munir Makram responded to the criticism, stating that what he did does not violate religious or legal norms, and he asked: 'Are we legally prohibited from advertising graves?' He also added: 'I have the full freedom to do what I deem appropriate, and no one has the right to be my guardian.' According to the 'Tahya Masr' website, Makram also expressed his indignation at the fact that real estate advertisements for villas worth tens of millions are permitted, while an advertisement for graves sold at low prices is attacked. It is worth noting that artist Munir Makram, who is 64 years old, graduated from the Faculty of Law at Ain Shams University in 1984. He began his artistic career as an assistant theater director, then worked as an assistant director in television works, and participated in directing the series 'Darb Askar.' He starred in series such as 'I Won't Live in My Father's Shadow,' 'The Wandering Light,' 'Umm Kulthum,' 'The Accused My Father,' 'Hakim Pasha,' and films such as 'Yacoubian Building,' 'The Blood of a Gazelle,' and 'The President's Chef.'
