Egypt Warns of New Wave of Mobile Phone Hacking Attempts

Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has renewed its warnings about a wave of mobile phone hacking attempts via calls. The official spokesperson for the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Engineer Mohamed Ibrahim, stated that these attempts target all mobile phone users in Egypt, from 3G to 5G. In remarks to an Egyptian TV channel, he emphasized the necessity of not opening links from unknown sources, warning that some of them carry viruses or malicious software capable of hacking the phone or stealing personal data. He also called on citizens not to answer incoming calls from unknown international numbers, and to secure their phones by setting strong passwords for important applications they use for financial and other transactions. Earlier this month, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Egypt had already issued warnings following an increase in complaints about unknown international calls. Through an official statement, it urged citizens to be cautious when dealing with links, messages, and attachments, especially those coming from unknown sources or appearing unusual, even if they appear as messages from known entities or companies. The statement also called for every user to be aware of modern fraud methods, whether through messages, calls, or links, and to be vigilant for any unusual behavior on their phone, such as sudden slowdowns, increased data consumption, or the appearance of applications they did not install. The Authority confirmed that it is continuously monitoring the situation in cooperation with international companies and relevant state bodies and is taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of mobile phone users in Egypt.
