The Arab foreign ministers unanimously approved the nomination of Ambassador Nabil Fahmy for the position of Secretary-General of the Arab League, succeeding Ahmed Abu Ghait.

The Council of Arab Foreign Ministers, held today via video conference, approved Egypt's request to nominate Dr. Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the Arab League, replacing Ahmed Abu Ghait. Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, expressed Egypt's appreciation for the unanimous decision of the Council of Ministers at the ministerial level to recommend to the 35th ordinary Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to support the nomination of former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi for the position of Secretary-General of the Arab League for a five-year term.

The decision was made unanimously during the virtual meeting of Arab foreign ministers today, following Egypt's request to nominate him as a successor to Ahmed Abu Ghait.

Earlier today, the work of the Council of the Arab League at the level of permanent representatives began, as a prelude to the ministerial meeting scheduled to be held later at the headquarters of the Arab League General Secretariat. During the opening session, the presidency of the new Council was handed over from the United Arab Emirates, represented by Ambassador Hamad Al-Zaabi, to the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain's Ambassador to the Arab League, Fawzia Zainal, confirmed that the region is facing unprecedented challenges that threaten Arab national security, and praised the role played by the UAE during its previous presidency in supporting and enhancing joint Arab action.

Final approval of Fahmy's appointment is expected at the upcoming Arab conference in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
