
Today, on Monday, the largest club in Egypt, Al-Ahly, mourns the passing of their former player and renowned television commentator Hossam Ash-Sharbeni at the age of 87. Sharbeni, widely known as an "icon of commentary in the Arab world," found fame in the fifties and sixties of the last century with the club and the Egyptian national team, with which he won the Africa Cup in 1959.
"The president of the club, Captain Mahmoud Al-Hatib, and the board members express their deep sadness and announce the passing of Captain Mahmoud Ash-Sharbeni, a player for Al-Ahly and a former Egyptian national team player, a well-known sports commentator who has today passed away. May he rest in peace, and may his family find solace and comfort," stated Al-Ahly.
Sharbeni was a nine-time champion with Al-Ahly, including four-times winner of the Egyptian championship in the 1957-1958, 1958-1959, 1960-1961, and 1961-1962 seasons. He also won the Egypt Cup three times in the 1957-1958, 1960-1961, and 1965-1966 seasons. With the Egyptian national team, he secured fourth place in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
After retiring from his football career in the late sixties, Sharbeni became a radio and television commentator. The Egyptian Football Federation also paid tribute to the late Sharbeni.
