A state of grief has spread across Egyptian sports circles following the death of fencer Omar Abdel Khawy, a member of the Egyptian national fencing (sabre) team. The Egyptian Fencing Federation, headed by Tareq El-Husseini, officially announced the athlete's passing. The federation's statement read: "The Board of Directors of the Egyptian Fencing Federation, its members, the Executive Director, and all employees of the federation, with deep sorrow and regret, announce the death of Omar Abdel Khawy, a player on the Egyptian national sabre fencing team." The statement added: "The federation extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, praying to God to have mercy upon him and grant his family patience and solace."
