The group stage of the African Cup of Nations once again surprised in the city of Agadir, where Egypt faced South Africa. With a final score of 1–0, the pharaonic team secured its place in the quarter‑finals.
Mohamed Salah's goal came in stoppage time, after a decisive penalty that he also scored on Monday against Zimbabwe. With the ball in the net, Salah shot directly at the centre of the goal, giving Egypt the advantage.
Captain Mohamed El Shenawy was key in the second half, with several interventions that kept the team in front. "We gave it our all in this match until the end, and we also look forward to the best for what’s coming", said El Shenawy, 37 years old.
Despite the expulsion of Mohamed Hany for a foul that cost him a second yellow card, Egypt managed to keep control of the game. The defence and the goalkeeper were solid, and the referee maintained discipline with firm decisions.
With six points in two matches, Egypt tops Group B, while South Africa sits with three. The top two from each group advance to the next stage, along with the best third‑placed teams.
