Nasser's Brother Sues Property Owner Over Rental Dispute

Nasser's Brother Sues Property Owner Over Rental Dispute

Tariq Abdel Nasser, brother of late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, filed an official report with the Ajuzah police station. He stated that he was subjected to an attempt to force him out of his apartment in the Engineers' area in Giza. This followed a dispute between Tariq Abdel Nasser and the property owner, which escalated into an assault and damage to the residential unit. Abdel Nasser filed the report, accusing the property owner of invading his privacy, damaging his apartment door, and attempting to forcibly evict him. This dispute arose due to the nature of the 'old' rental contract for the unit. Egyptian media, quoting the late president's brother, reported that the property owner deliberately caused damage to the apartment door to harass him, pressure him, and force him to vacate the premises in an attempt to reclaim the leased property, as it falls under the old rental law. Initial investigations indicated that the late president's brother has been living in the apartment for many years under an old rental system. The pace of conflicts between him and the owner escalated after the new rental law was issued, as the owner sought to obtain the apartment and force its tenant to evacuate by all means. Security and specialized forces went to the scene to conduct the necessary technical inspection. The inspection confirmed visible damage to the apartment door. Investigative authorities heard from Tariq Abdel Nasser, who emphasized that the incident constitutes a blatant attack on his legal possession of the residential unit and an illegal attempt to force him to leave. All laws regulating the old rental system will be canceled after this period, after which any new rental contract will be subject to the provisions of civil law, ensuring freedom of contract between the two parties. He affirmed his full adherence to all rights guaranteed to him by law, especially under the laws governing the relationship between the owner and the tenant in old rental contracts. The competent authorities tasked the investigation unit with collecting the necessary information and details about the incident, and to begin reviewing surveillance cameras inside and around the property to fully understand the circumstances of the incident and take legal action. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had approved the old rental law last August. The Egyptian Parliament approved the bill in an attempt to address the legal and economic conditions related to properties leased under the old system. The new law stipulates a transitional period before ending old rental contracts, set at seven years for residential units and five years for units leased to individuals for non-residential purposes, paving the way for liberalizing the rental relationship between the owner and the tenant. Upon the end of the transitional period, the tenant is obligated to vacate the leased unit and return it to the owner.
