Egyptian Supply Minister Sherif Farouk announced on Sunday that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in sugar by 2025 as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at supporting and increasing local production of sugarcane and sugar beet. The plan involves expanding cultivated areas and improving productivity. The minister also highlighted a 17% increase in local wheat supplies during the 2025 season, reaching over four million tons, while the total consumption of wheat for producing subsidized bread is about nine million tons, with the remainder being imported. He explained that if the current annual growth rate in local supplies is maintained, the goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat for subsidized bread production from local output, alongside an ambitious plan to expand wheat cultivation areas and other strategic crops.
