Egypt Ends Temporary Customs Exemption on Imported Mobile Phones

Egyptian authorities have announced the end of the exceptional decision exempting imported mobile phones from customs duties for travelers from abroad. A joint statement from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Customs Service revealed that the decision will come into effect starting next Wednesday. This step comes after Cairo achieved a significant leap in the mobile phone manufacturing industry, as part of its strategy to enhance its position as a leading regional and global technology hub. The Egyptian market hosts about 15 international companies specializing in mobile phone manufacturing, producing approximately 20 million mobile phones annually according to the highest global quality standards, according to the statement circulated by Egyptian media. Regarding the exemption for mobile phones of Egyptians residing abroad, the statement clarified that the exemption remains valid for Egyptians and tourists for 90 days under the previously announced conditions. The statement noted that the decision contributed to creating 10,000 job opportunities for Egyptian youth. It explained that taxes and duties on mobile phones imported from abroad can be paid through the 'Talefoni' application, in addition to digital payment methods available through banks and e-wallets. A grace period of up to 90 days from the first activation is provided to regularize the status of devices before any regulatory actions are taken. Furthermore, it will be possible to installment these taxes and duties in the upcoming period.
