Egyptian Doctor Referred to Disciplinary Committee Over Unapproved Medical Research

The Egyptian Doctors Syndicate announced on Saturday that it has referred Dr. Diaa El-Awady to a disciplinary committee after he was found to have violated Article 19 of the Code of Medical Ethics, which prohibits the publication or promotion of scientific research not approved by the relevant authorities. Dr. Osama Abdel-Hai, the head of the syndicate, confirmed that the syndicate will file an official report with the Public Prosecution and notify the Supreme Council for Media Regulation to take the necessary legal and administrative measures regarding the actions attributed to the doctor. The investigation revealed that El-Awady had previously admitted to relying on unapproved research and requested a deadline to submit it to the syndicate. However, the multiple complaints and the course of the investigation led to the decision to refer him to the disciplinary committee without delay. The investigation committee and the ethics committee of the Egyptian Doctors Syndicate stated that during 2025, the doctor used social media to disseminate medical and scientific information and opinions that were unverified and contrary to established scientific facts. He addressed numerous specialties and diseases outside his area of expertise, including kidney diseases, diabetes, digestive system disorders, heart conditions, cancer, immune disorders, eye diseases, hormonal imbalances, infertility, reproductive disorders, and liver diseases, among many others. The syndicate's statement also noted that the doctor relied on unapproved or unauthorized treatment methods, violating both nationally and internationally recognized protocols, posing a significant danger to public health, especially as some patients rely on content shared on these platforms as a trusted source. The syndicate has recently received complaints from patients and followers who accused the doctor of publishing medical content that violates approved scientific standards and providing treatment guidelines outside the bounds of proper professional practice through social media. In a related move, the syndicate contacted the Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University to verify his academic status, where the university confirmed that his service ended in 2023 and he is no longer a member of the teaching staff. The syndicate emphasized its commitment to protecting the profession and combating any unregulated medical practices that could harm patients' health or undermine trust in the medical sector.
