Egyptian Wife Seeks Divorce Over Cooking Disputes

Egypt witnessed an unusual divorce case in a family court in Nasr City. The case involved a wife who sought to end her two-year marriage, which had produced one child, due to recurring disputes over cooking methods. Her lawyer, Noha El-Gendy, stated that the husband excessively criticized her culinary skills, leading to continuous arguments. The final straw was when the wife made a mistake while preparing the dish 'mashi'. The husband then insulted her, threatened to marry another, and verbally divorced her, but later refused to formalize the divorce, leaving her in a state of marital limbo. This prompted her to turn to the court and request a divorce (khul). In a similar incident reported by Egyptian media, a young man in Port Said brutally attacked his pregnant wife over a dispute about a plate of fried potatoes. He pulled out her fingernails, broke her ribs, and then threw her from the balcony of the second-floor apartment. The wife refused to return to him and requested a formal separation, subsequently also resorting to the court to obtain a divorce ruling.
