Cairo Book Fair Scandal Over AI-Generated Novels

Cultural activists discovered novels at the Cairo Book Fair that were fully written by AI and published without proper review. This incident has sparked concern in literary circles and raised questions about the authenticity of modern Arabic prose.

Cairo Book Fair Scandal Over AI-Generated Novels

Cultural activists at the latest Cairo International Book Fair revealed several novels that had been completely processed using artificial intelligence. The authors of these works failed to review and polish them sufficiently, resulting in the publication of books containing instructions and messages from the application regarding the requirements for creating a literary work and its execution. This incident was considered by some to be a 'cultural scandal'. In one of these novels, the program's response to an author who wanted to write the entire text using this technology is shown. The program replies, saying: 'Thank you for the clarification, I will continue to narrate the events, focusing on the development of the relationship between (Rouh) and (Ayad) after planting the flowers while maintaining hope in their relationship'. The application adds, explaining the rest of its writing plan for the text: 'The events will be distant from the past and will focus on the present and future'. After the author forgot to delete the previous paragraphs, the application resumes the narrative in a conventional way, saying: 'After they planted the flowers in the backyard, the days passed slowly'. The novel as an Arab genre is one of the sources of magic and pleasure in contemporary Arab life. It tops the list of best-selling literary works, and many of them have been successfully adapted into films. Moreover, many major awards are now dedicated to this genre, attracting writers with substantial financial rewards. However, this magic born from narrative storytelling is now threatened by a loss of 'authenticity' due to growing concern over a trend of some impatient young people seeking fame or untalented individuals turning to artificial intelligence to write literary novels.
